Where - River Little Ouse-from St Helen's Picnic Site, Santon Downham
What - A trip primarily aimed for canoeists although kayakers are also welcome to paddle with us. The intention is to paddle / pole at some stage, from the car park at St Helens Picnic site up towards Thetford, returning to the put in point. Thereby reducing the need for any shuttling of cars. Whilst the toilet block at St Helens is no longer, there are facilities at the Forestry Commission offices site /car park in Santon Downham for before and after the trip.
What’s it like? - This stretch of the river is usually very suitable for this activity. Its also a very pleasant river to paddle and because we head upstream to begin with the return journey, with the current, is even easier. Its also an ideal opportunity to practice poling for all our canoeists, especially those going for their star awards. This trip is not suitable for absolute beginners but fine for those looking to gain experience by doing trips , its main intent however is to encourage canoeists to practice poling during the day.
Meet at the club 0930 hrs for 0945 hrs departure.
What to bring? The usual items for a day trip, including waterproofs, additional clothing, packed lunch and drinks packed in waterproof containers. I cannot remember if the car park is pay and display or not so bring some change just in case it is. The club has some poles for members use.
Transport, cars and roof rack space. As with all our trips we are dependent upon club members assisting with transport both for paddlers and boats. If you need a lift I suggest asking other members who might be going on Wednesdays club night, don’t leave it until Sunday morning. The availability of transport is likely to dictate the size of the group.
