. Friday 6th December 2024. River Yare.
What: A short day time paddle on the River Yare from Cringleford Bridge heading upstream towards Earlham Road Bridge and return with the strong possibility of some river clearance thrown in for good measure. This paddle has been added to the programme to reconnoitre a stretch of river we use when undertaking the round Norwich paddle.
Is this trip for me? If you can confidently paddle from the club to Hellesdon Mill and return and still have some energy left, you should be Ok for this trip. However its not a straight forward paddle. I’m expecting several obstacles on the way so expect to find many fallen tree, vegetation blocking our way. Old hands for such trips may like to bring work gloves, saw, secateurs, loppers, haul rope etc.
For information: Eagle Canoe Club to Hellesdon Mill and return is approx 6 Km (3.75 miles). This morning , into afternoon trip is approx 4 miles.
When: Friday 6th December 2024. Meet at Eagle Canoe Club: 0930 hrs.
What's involved? Load up with the craft you intend to paddle, paddles, buoyancy aids etc. As its river clearance the sharing of canoes is a good option. Drive to the car park by Cringleford Bridge ( opposite the entrance to Waitrose car park). carry /portage craft to put in (under the A11 bridge) and start paddling. We paddle upstream towards Earlham Road bridge having to clear our way through any obstructions. In due course return the way we came.
Upon return to club, boats/kit are put away.
Transport, cars and roof racks
As usual we are dependent upon members using their vehicles to do the necessary moving of canoes / kayaks to the get in point and return from there to the club. The availability of transport is one of the factors that will dictate the numbers that can undertake this trip. The nature of this trip, activity is better suited for small numbers. There are no car shuttles once at Cringleford.
What to bring? Please wear appropriate clothing for canoeing for the weather conditions on the day.
Consider if you have one or borrow from club a trolley to facilitate moving craft from car park to get in point. Failing which help each other to get craft to the waterside. Remember to bring any roof rack straps you have with you.
The usual items for a day trip, including waterproofs, additional clothing, packed lunch and drinks packed in waterproof containers. If confident in there use, hand tools useful for cutting back vegetation. Toilet facilities - available at the club and probably in Waitrose at Eaton.
On line sign up is available for this trip. Please indicate what sort of craft you wish to paddle. On sign up your status will show as Shortlisted . I‘ll aim to respond promptly indicating whether you are able to be accommodated on this activity.
Cheers
Tim
